Storm Water Management Basics

Storm Water Management Basics

Mississippi has been blessed with abundant water resources, such as beautiful creeks, streams, rivers, estuaries, bays, and coastal waters.  As our state continues to grow, we face challenges to maintain clean water bodies. One of the challenges is managing storm water runoff and reducing polluted runoff.  The following web sites contain information on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) storm water and general water quality:

Stormwater Permitting and Development

If you are developing a property that is greater than 5 acres, you’ll need information about how Mississippi manages stormwater. You’ll also need a permit from the state. All of this information can be found at:

Mississippi State Stormwater Resources

Property owners with a development or drainage project between 1 and 5 acres, will go to the County for your permit. The County has adopted regulations pertaining to proper stormwater management entitled:

Erosion Control Ordinance and

Post-Construction Runoff Ordinance

These ordinances and the County’s requirements can be found online at: waveland.gov

Green Strategies for Managing Storm Water Runoff

Managing drainage and reducing flooding on your property is often cheaper and more attractive if you work with nature to accomplish your goals. To learn about these alternatives to pipes and pavement, please visit the websites below.

The Low Impact Development Center was established in 1998 to develop and provide information to individuals and organizations dedicated to protecting the environment and our water resources through proper site design techniques that replicate pre-existing hydrologic site conditions.
